The opening of "Neurosis" with "The Butterfly Effect" and "Hannibal"
Based on conventions, a psychological thriller can be released under an indepedent studio however it can also be released under a huge film studio based on location, cast and budget as well as many other things. "The Butterfly Effect" was distributed by New Line Cinema in 2004. New Line Cinema started off as an independent film studio however it became a subsidiary of Time Warner in 1996, and later merged with sister studio Warner Bros in 2008.
From my research, I noticed that a psychological thriller is commonly released based on the budget of the movie. For example the budget for "The Butterfly Effect" was $13 million and it was released under New Line Cinema which has a history as an independent film studio whereas the budget for "Hannibal" was $87 million and was released under Universal Studios which is known for releasing big budget films. My group's film budget was significantly lower than a few million pounds therefore we opted to release our film under an independent studio because we wanted our film to be presented as an artistic small piece rather than a 'money-maker' which is released by a huge film distributor. To avoid copying "The Butterfly Effect" and "Hannibal" we decided to research independent film studios that specialised in small artistic films. We decided to use "Fox Searchlight Pictures" because it specialised in small independent movies as well as British films. An example of an independent psychological thriller released under "Fox Searchlight Pictures" is "One Hour Photo"
